Things that are Cool. Erno Rubik’s Puzzle Cube.

In this series of posts, I will enumerate objects, things, ideas, places, nouns, etc. that make living in my world great. Take the capitalization symmetry in the title of the this post. To the everday peruser of blogs, this may seem like an error typical of us amateurs to the blogosphere. But by harnessing the knowledge to be revealed to you in this blog-series, you will quickly come to find that fun, leisurely, visually attractive things come in many forms, from symmetrical sentencing to alliterative announcements to furniture arrangements (yes, saracasm is aloof but if you can’t take my word for it, check out Lifehacker’s Show and Tell Photostream). Although the previously mentioned things are all extremely nifty, they are not the subject of this first revelation.

Presenting…….

The Rubik’s Cube.  The mother of frustration.  The grandmother of headaches.  This little cube has entertained both young and old, albeit for the most part only minutes at a time, and legitimately makes almost every day that I’m at my desk great.  Obviously my gleeful exuberance for these rotating squares don’t come from the color scheme or turning mechanisms.  Naturally it stems from my uncanny ability ability to tear through these suckers like tissue paper.  With that being said, I have maybe 3-4 God given abilities.  Folding clothes, setting up class schedules, the ability to somehow jinx my favorite sports teams into losing whenever I watch them, and the ability to let my fingers loose on a Rubik’s Cube.

Here’s a few images taken by me to show how before and after pictures with Rubik’s Cubes generally work.

Most people have their own personal devices to facilitate idea generation or to remain focused (twittling thumbs or staring blankly are two great examples).  My vice, as you may well have guessed by now, is to mess around with a toy cube.  Something about the infinite number of possible combinations, but only one solution, really get my brain matter jiggling (some might argue how healthy that actually is…).  Whaaaa….? That slogan sounds familiar?

Of course it does! Let the year 1981 explain:

In addition to being quite the challenging puzzle, even the mere presence of one of these plastic conundrums can serve as an excellent coffee table piece or bedroom decoration.  But, let’s be honest, who cares about simple aesthetics when you can’t even solve the damn thing?  Some of you might have noticed that among my inherent God given abilities, the natural, instinctual ability to solve ostensibly unworkable riddles was not one of them.  Context clues aside, I didn’t teach myself to solve Erno Rubik’s puzzle cube.  But I, in true Promethean spirit, will show you the light.  A quick trip to youtube and a few days practice will get you right on your way. Here’s Part 1 and 2

I thought this picture sums up nicely what was going through my head the first few hours of figuring things out, aptly titled Rubik’s Cube Hell.

The Rubik’s Cube is only one of the many things that keep my life interesting enough to read about!  Be sure to keep an eye out for my next post in this mini series of blog posts: Things that are Cool.
